Why retakes fail more often
Between January and March 2026, early Journeyman candidates passed 67.23% of first attempts and only 19.72% of repeat attempts. In the same report, repeat takers averaged 13.75 of 24 Calculations points, barely above first-time takers at 13.15. Taking the same exam again without changing how you study mostly produces the same score.
A 4-week plan after a fail
- Day 1: write down the report. Copy every area marked as a weakness and the part you failed. Do it the same day, while you still remember which questions felt slow.
- Week 1: rebuild your book. Re-check that your soft-bound 2026 NEC follows the rules (publisher tabs only) and that the articles you missed are easy to open. See tabs on the Texas exam.
- Week 2: weak areas only. Untimed questions from your two weakest areas. For each one, write the article and section you used.
- Week 3: timed parts. A full timed part for whichever part you failed: 59 questions in 130 minutes, or 26 calculations in 110 minutes.
- Week 4: two full mocks. Both parts under real timing. Book only when you clear 70% on each part with a margin.
If you failed Calculations, start with how the Calculations part is scored. It shows where 14 of the 24 points sit.
Avoid losing the $78 for reasons other than the exam
- Cancel or reschedule at least 2 days before the exam, through PSI’s website or by phone; voicemail and email do not count.
- Arrive 30 minutes early with an ID that matches your TDLR record exactly. Late arrivals are not admitted.
- Bring a silent, non-programmable calculator and a compliant code book. See the exam day rules.
