Lineworker ETA and CAST Scope Check: 12 Original Warm-Up Questions
Use this check to practice only the topic categories that the Electrical Training Alliance publishes for its applicant sample: algebra and functions, plus reading comprehension.
Program test index
Copy this blank index for your own target programs and keep the employer's test notice with it; an unknown test or public scope stays unresolved.
| Program | Test used (ETA / CAST / other / unknown) | Official public scope | Date checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Program A | Unknown; _____ | Not confirmed; official source _____ | _____ |
| Program B | Unknown; _____ | Not confirmed; official source _____ | _____ |
| Program C | Unknown; _____ | Not confirmed; official source _____ | _____ |
Program A, B and C are blank examples, not named programs or sample questions. Example only. Check every item against the official source and your employer or school in writing.

Your first lineworker theory map
Start with a paper study index. O*NET names transmission and distribution systems and equipment such as cables, transformers, circuit breakers and switches. The map below connects those topic names to the algebra practice and distribution study map on this page. It is a starting vocabulary map, not a complete lineworker course or a description of every employer’s test.
Topic source: the O*NET occupation summary retained for this guide, checked 2026-10-27. That date is a source check date, not confirmation that a training provider is enrolling now.
- System context: transmission and distribution. Keep these as separate labels in your index. Record which label an assigned lesson actually uses. If it does not say, write UNKNOWN rather than guessing from a photograph.
- Distribution setting: overhead and underground. Use the existing distribution study map below to organize the two settings on a supplied learning diagram. A study label does not identify a safe work location.
- Equipment: transformers and switches. Put each name on its own vocabulary card. Beside it, record the purpose and symbol stated in the supplied lesson, with its page or legend reference. Leave missing details UNKNOWN. Do not infer connections, settings or switch position.
- Grounding. Give this a separate study card: lesson reference, the purpose stated there, and a question for the instructor. A grounding concept note is not a field grounding method or proof that equipment is safe.
- Basic electrical relationships and system diagrams. Use the existing map’s voltage, current, resistance and power row alongside its diagram and equipment-identification rows. Keep the drawing’s own legend with your notes; an unfamiliar symbol stays unresolved.
- Basic algebra. Start with the six algebra and functions questions below. For each missed item, keep the original expression, your correction and a substitution check. These paper calculations do not determine an equipment rating or field setting.
A completed paper example
Fictional example: a learner’s study index, not a system drawing. System labels: transmission / distribution. Distribution settings to study: overhead / underground. Equipment cards: transformer / switch / cable / protective device. Separate concept card: grounding. For every card, the lesson reference and instructor correction are UNKNOWN until supplied. None of these labels establishes the state of real equipment.
Algebra example from question 2: 4x + 6 = 30; 4x = 24; x = 6. Check: 4 × 6 + 6 = 30. This is a worked arithmetic example only.
Keep your own study note
Copy these fields to paper or a private document: date; topic name; lesson title and page; diagram or legend reference; my explanation; UNKNOWN items; question for the instructor; correction received; next review date. An unanswered question remains pending.
This page does not save or submit that note. A private completion mark, a warm-up score, a purchase, membership, an instructor’s review, employer task authorization and an authority-issued license are separate records. No result here promises admission, a passing score, a job, a training place or a license.
Algebra and functions
1. If f(x) = 3x + 7, what is f(5)?
- A. 15
- B. 22
- C. 26

2. Solve 4x + 6 = 30.
- A. 4
- B. 5
- C. 6
- D. 9
Answer: C. Subtract 6, then divide 24 by 4.
3. A crew uses 3 identification tags for every 12 poles. At the same rate, how many tags are needed for 28 poles?
- A. 5
- B. 7
- C. 9
- D. 12
Answer: B. The rate is one tag per four poles, and 28 divided by 4 is 7.
4. A table pairs x values 1, 2, 3 with y values 6, 10, 14. If the pattern stays linear, what is y when x is 4?
- A. 15
- B. 16
- C. 17
- D. 18
Answer: D. The y value increases by 4 for each increase of 1 in x.
5. Solve 2(y – 3) = 18.
- A. 12
- B. 9
- C. 6
- D. 3
Answer: A. Divide by 2 to get y minus 3 equals 9, then add 3.
6. Five eighths of 24 checklist items are complete. How many remain?
- A. 6
- B. 8
- C. 9
- D. 15
Answer: C. Five eighths of 24 is 15, so 24 minus 15 leaves 9.
Reading comprehension
Passage A: An applicant page states that applications are reviewed only after all required documents are received. A qualifying test result allows an interview but does not guarantee selection. If a job opening changes, applicants must follow the current posting.
7. What does a qualifying test result allow according to Passage A?
- A. Automatic selection
- B. An interview
- C. A waived document check
- D. A permanent place on every list
Answer: B. The passage separates interview eligibility from selection.
8. What happens before the application can be reviewed?
- A. The applicant buys tools
- B. The job title changes
- C. All required documents are received
- D. Selection is guaranteed
Answer: C. The first sentence states the document condition.
9. Which source controls after a job opening changes?
- A. An old saved copy
- B. A friend’s application
- C. A general career article
- D. The current posting
Answer: D. The passage directs applicants to the current posting.
Passage B: Training begins at 7:30 a.m. Check-in closes at 7:20 a.m. Participants must bring identification and their assignment notice. Tools are issued onsite, so personal tools should remain at home.
10. When does check-in close?
- A. 7:20 a.m.
- B. 7:30 a.m.
- C. 7:40 a.m.
- D. The passage does not say
Answer: A. The second sentence gives the check-in deadline.
11. What two items must participants bring?
- A. Personal tools and boots
- B. A test score and a receipt
- C. Identification and an assignment notice
- D. A ladder and a tool belt
Answer: C. Both items are named in the third sentence.
12. What should participants do with personal tools?
- A. Bring every tool they own
- B. Leave them at home
- C. Deliver them one day early
- D. Replace the onsite tools
Answer: B. The passage says tools are issued onsite.
Build the distribution theory map before timed practice
O*NET lists installing, maintaining and repairing transmission and distribution systems, including cables, transformers, circuit breakers and switches. It also lists inspection and testing, using wiring diagrams and test instruments, and laying underground cable. Use the map below to organize study evidence before asking a trainer to review it. Official O*NET source Checked 2026-10-27.
Training boundary: this is a desk study map. It does not teach field procedures or authorize climbing, grounding, switching, testing, splicing or energized work. Those activities require the employer or training provider’s qualified supervision and authorization.
| Learning area | Evidence goal | Record to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Overhead and underground distribution | Trace a source-to-load path and distinguish overhead structures from underground cable and conduit on a supplied diagram. | Trainer-reviewed diagram with every unknown marked. |
| Basic electrical relationships | Explain voltage, current, resistance and power in the limited context of a supplied study problem. | Worked study notes reviewed by the instructor or sponsor. |
| Transformers | Identify the stated function, nameplate fields and connections on the training diagram without inferring a field setting. | Marked-up training diagram and reviewer note. |
| System diagrams | Follow conductor, switch, protective-device and equipment symbols on the employer’s or program’s approved drawing. | One approved drawing with a source legend. |
| Grounding | Explain the purpose shown in the approved lesson and keep it separate from a field grounding procedure. | Lesson reference and trainer correction record. |
| Equipment identification | Distinguish the named cables, switches, protective devices, transformers and test instruments in the supplied learning material. | Photo-free private checklist or approved lab identification record. |
Use the existing distribution map as your L1 study index
The six learning areas immediately above are the existing theory map for apprentice study: overhead and underground distribution; basic electrical relationships; transformers; system diagrams; grounding; and equipment identification. Keep that map with its stated evidence goals and records. Do not count a reading check as proof of field competence.
For a paper review, give each existing row one status: not started; my explanation drafted; question pending; or instructor feedback recorded. Add the lesson reference, your own explanation and any correction beside that status. Use UNKNOWN for a missing lesson, drawing or reviewer response. The status records your study evidence, not an employer’s competence sign-off.
Fictional example: a private review note. Area: transformers. Lesson reference: UNKNOWN. My explanation: pending a supplied lesson. Symbol or nameplate detail: UNKNOWN. Question: which lesson and legend should I use? Status: question pending. Instructor feedback: not received. Employer authorization: not established. A completed-looking template must not turn these unknowns into an approval.
If the supplied material is incomplete or you cannot explain a row, stop that item and ask the qualified instructor. Keep the original note and the correction separately. This guide does not provide a reviewer, supervised practice or official verification.
Use the score as a next-step signal
- 10 to 12 correct: compare your target employer’s current testing notice with the official pages before scheduling or paying for preparation.
- 7 to 9 correct: redo the missed algebra or reading category, then repeat the check without looking at the answers.
- 0 to 6 correct: rebuild the two published ETA categories with basic algebra and short-passage practice before using a timed check.
EEI says it does not administer tests directly to applicants and directs applicants to the hiring company for test information. Confirm whether your target uses ETA, CAST, another assessment, or no assessment.
