Texas Lineworker Zero-Experience Entry Check

Use current official pages to separate a real entry point from an old posting, a later-stage role, or a program page that does not publish the detail you need.

Groundman to supervisor: confirm who you report to

Before your first assignment, ask the employer to name your reporting contact, training contact, task authorizer and backup contact. Job titles alone do not establish who may authorize your work. One person may hold more than one role; do not assume every employer uses the same reporting order.

Use these five titles to ask the right questions

These are orientation prompts, not an employer organization chart or a list of tasks you are qualified to do.

Groundman
Ask what the employer includes in this entry role, which duties are outside your assignment, and who receives your questions and progress reports. Do not infer permission for line work from the title.
Apprentice
Ask who is assigned to train and supervise you, who reviews your learning records, and who can confirm the task scope. A learning record or a completed checklist is not that confirmation.
Journey worker
Ask whether this person is your assigned trainer or reporting contact for the task. Experience or a title alone does not tell you whether the employer designated that person to authorize your assignment.
Crew leader
Ask who coordinates your crew’s assignments, receives progress or problem reports, and resolves unclear instructions. Confirm whether the crew leader is also your task authorizer or must refer the question to someone else.
Supervisor
Ask who is responsible when a scope or reporting question cannot be resolved within the crew, and who serves as the backup when that person is unavailable. Have the employer identify the actual person and reporting method.

Write down your employer’s actual reporting chain

Copy the prompts into your own notes and take them to orientation. Leave an unanswered field as UNKNOWN. This page has no form submission, account save, employer sign-off or official record service.

  • Employer, role, assignment and date checked: ______
  • My immediate reporting contact and how to reach them: ______
  • My assigned trainer or journey worker, if applicable: ______
  • My crew leader, and what I report to that person: ______
  • The person designated to confirm my permitted task scope: ______
  • The supervisor or other designated contact for an unresolved question: ______
  • The backup contact and reporting method if my first contact is unavailable: ______
  • Who confirmed this chain, the date, and which questions remain UNKNOWN: ______

Repeat the reporting arrangement back to the designated contact: “I report to ___; my training contact is ___; task-scope questions go to ___; an unresolved question goes to ___; the backup is ___. Is that correct?” Record what still needs confirmation instead of filling it in from a job title.

When instructions or authority are unclear

If an instruction conflicts with your confirmed scope, the responsible person is unclear, or you have a safety concern, stop the task and ask the employer’s designated safety or supervisory contact. Follow the employer’s reporting and emergency procedures. Do not wait through a routine reporting sequence to raise an immediate concern, and do not attempt electrical work or a rescue from this guide.

Fictional example: A new hire is introduced to a journey worker and a crew leader, but nobody identifies the task authorizer. The unanswered field stays UNKNOWN. The new hire asks the designated supervisor to clarify the reporting arrangement before proceeding; this example supplies no employer approval or work authorization.

Keep the records separate: Reading this guide, completing private notes, a practice score, a purchase and membership are personal learning activities. None is an employer signature, official training completion, verified work hours, a licensing decision or permission for a field task.

For a separate scope check, read the free job, employer and task guide. Use O*NET’s first-line supervisor profile for general role context, then confirm your own arrangement with the employer. The role-learning need was recorded on 2026-10-27; no current employer reporting chart is supplied here.

Copy these fields before you call an entry point open

  1. Organization, role or program, official URL, and check date.
  2. Exact minimum education and experience shown on that page.
  3. CDL class, endorsements, and when each is required.
  4. Closing date, open-until-filled language, or “Official page does not list it.”
  5. Current status: open, unlisted, or closed. Never carry an older status forward.
  6. Any medical, drug-screen, physical ability, aptitude, or document gate, using only the official page.

Continue with the existing official application and job-page directory and additional official entry points. This page adds a verification routine rather than repeating those directories.

ETA and CAST: prepare from the official scope

The Electrical Training Alliance sample page identifies Algebra and Functions and Reading Comprehension. Review the official samples, then follow the selected sponsor’s instructions. This guide does not create test questions.

EEI describes CAST for construction and skilled-trades work in areas including transmission and distribution, facilities and equipment, and service and repair. The hiring organization provides its own test and result instructions, so confirm the exact assessment with that organization.

CDL, ELDT, and medical checks

FMCSA ELDT applies to specified first-time licenses, upgrades, and endorsements, with training from a registered provider before the relevant test. A DOT medical exam must come from a medical examiner on the National Registry. Record the employer’s deadline separately from the federal training and medical rules.

Pay and benefits are role-specific snapshots

Texas occupation estimate

BLS May 2023, SOC 49-9051: employment 13,710; median $34.86 per hour; mean $35.01 per hour; annual mean $72,820. This is a dated statewide estimate, not an opening or offer.

BLS Texas OEWS table

Entry postings

Bryan listed apprentice starting pay of $25.07 per hour. Seguin listed $28.83 per hour. Austin said commensurate and listed health coverage, leave, retirement, development, and on-call or callback pay without a public base wage.

Check each posting above for the role and date.

Later-stage cooperative role

PEC listed a $40.19 minimum hourly rate plus KPI bonuses and competitive benefits for Apprentice 3. It required completion of Apprentice Level 2, so it is not a zero-experience comparison.

Check the PEC posting

Do not treat different stages, locations, employers, or data periods as interchangeable. Recheck the selected posting before making a decision.

Zero-experience work conditions self-check

Use one actual offer or posting: mark your own acceptance separately from what that employer states, and leave missing requirements Not confirmed.

This status is only what the cited official page showed on the check date. Recheck the original page before applying, enrolling, or spending money. A page without a deadline is not proof that an opening stays available.
