Before and after: three examples

These are sample lines to show the method. Use your own real numbers.

Office worker

Before: Administrative assistant. Answered phones, scheduled meetings, did data entry.

After:

  • Kept the schedule and records for a 12-person office for 3 years with every deadline met.
  • Used spreadsheets every day for totals, percentages and budgets.
  • Trained 4 new hires on company procedures and checklists.

Why it works: it shows reliability, math and following procedures, which is what an apprentice does on a jobsite.

Retail worker

Before: Sales associate and cashier at a home store.

After:

  • Opened the store at 6 am for 2 years with perfect attendance.
  • Unloaded trucks and stocked cases of up to 50 lbs, using ladders and pallet jacks under store safety rules.
  • Balanced a cash drawer of about $3,000 a shift, always to the cent.
  • Helped about 150 customers a day find parts, including electrical supplies.

Why it works: it shows physical work, safety rules, reliability and math with money.

Veteran

Before: U.S. Army, motor transport operator, 4 years.

After:

  • Ran daily safety checks and preventive maintenance on heavy vehicles using written procedures.
  • Led a 4-person team on 30+ convoy missions with a clean safety record.
  • Passed regular drug screening and kept a clean driving record.

Why it works: it shows procedures, safety, leadership and a clean record. Bring your DD-214. Some Texas programs give veterans a direct interview or direct entry, including the Beaumont and West Texas JATCs (Beaumont, West Texas).

Rules that keep your resume strong

  • Claim only electrical work you really did. When you apply for a Journeyman license later, each supervising Master Electrician signs a TDLR Experience Verification Form saying what you did and for how long, and TDLR may contact people to verify it (TDLR Journeyman application, Form ELC017).
  • Put your license number at the top. Several programs ask for proof of your apprentice license when you apply. See the full program list.
  • Use numbers. Years, people, pounds, dollars and shifts.
  • One page. Print five copies for in-person visits.
  • Two plain lines under "What I bring" do the work of an objective statement.

Your next steps

Take your resume to contractors with the outreach scripts, and find the right program in all 68 TDLR-registered apprenticeship programs.
